Perceptions of English language teachers about their alienation of labor at universities in Turkey

Abstract

Based on a qualitative study, this article mainly focuses on the notion of alienation within the context of English language teachers in higher education. Focusing on the perceptions of teachers about their labour, this work attempts to understand the extent of teacher alienation and its triggering factors before focusing on how teachers responded to such alienation. The analysis of perceptions reveals that there is the alienated character of the participants’ labour as being monotonous, lacking satisfaction, and involuntary. Concerns about job security and productivity show the extent of their alienation, triggered by students, classroom technology, the division of labour, and conflicting and competitive relationships. The article concludes that teachers are unaware of their alienation due to disconnection from reality.

The learning styles and personality traits of undergraduates: A case at a state university in Istanbul

Abstract

This paper investigated dominant learning styles and personality traits, and their relationships among 224 undergraduates. It employed a quantitative research approach with a descriptive statistical method. Three instruments in the form of questionnaires were used to collect data: A demographic data form; a learning style inventory (Kolb’s Learning Style Inventory); and a personality trait inventory (The Big Five Inventory). Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS, version 17.0) was used for statistical analysis. Results indicated that the most frequently occurring learning style was ‘assimilator’, and there was no significant relationship between the various learning styles and gender, department, or Grade Point Average (GPA). Further findings indicated that the most frequently occurring personality trait was ‘agreeableness’, and there was no significant relationship between their personality traits and gender, department, or GPA. Finally, there was no significant relationship between the students’ learning styles and their personality traits.

Abstract

This paper offers a sociolinguistic account of the functional range and status of English in Turkey by discussing its role in national education policies as a reflection of governmental acquisition planning, by looking at societal attitudes towards the presence of English in Turkish life, and by examining borrowings from English by the Turkish mass media as examples of unplanned language spread. The paper examines in detail the role of English in different levels of national education, including its role in Turkish academia, as an indication of the status of English in the country. It then discusses societal and individual attitudes towards English and its role in the workplace. Finally, the use of borrowings from English by Turkish mass media is discussed with examples. The paper discusses how English has become yet another divide between the wealthier, educated urban populations and those belonging to other socioeconomic and geographic groups.
